240v/50a through two two-pole circuit breakers?

I have a dedicated line for a car charger running to my garage. It's 240 V/50a coming from my main breaker box. It initially went straight to the charger, but I thought I could run it to a subpanel in my garage to allow me to not only run 240 V and 50 A to the charger but also when that charger wasn't being used, have two separate 120 V lines for a shed that I built. I have seen a few places that, you shouldn't run this 240 V line through two separate breaker boxes and two separate two-pole breakers but I don't understand why. I still get 120 V out to the car charger though I'm not sure what I'm getting. I'm not pulling any other current off of that sub panel yet but I have noticed that my car charger occasionally gives me error codes that unfortunately I can't interpret (enel x who makes the charger went out of business in the US). Love some advice from someone who actually knows what they're doing. Thanks.
